Yesterday was the first gun violence prevention hearing of the 2020 legislative session. More than 100 volunteers and testifiers came to Olympia to urge lawmakers to restrict high-capacity magazines and pass other gun responsibility measures. After the hearing, the Governor and elected champions joined us for a press conference calling on lawmakers to pass the policies outlined in our legislative agenda.

I’ll be honest, John. As inspiring as yesterday was, it was also incredibly tense. It’s no secret that momentum is on our side. In the last few years, we’ve passed three ballot initiatives, elected a gun sense majority to Olympia, and passed 10 gun violence prevention bills last year alone. And every success we’ve celebrated has been a loss for our opponents. And they are enraged.

On Friday, about 500 gun rights extremists rallied at the Capitol. Representative Matt Shea -- who recently made national headlines after it was revealed he engaged in national terrorism -- encouraged the open-carrying crowd to “never back down.” Yesterday and today, some of these same individuals advocated AGAINST commonsense gun laws.

Meanwhile in Virginia, the Governor declared a state of emergency based on the erratic and threatening behavior of gun rights extremists.

Despite the intimidation members of the Alliance face, we returned to the Capitol this morning, this time to show support for bills related to restoring local authority, ammunition, and addressing the deadly intersection of alcohol and firearms.

None of this work would be possible without the support of our donors. Will you make a donation of $3, $5 or $10 today so that we can continue to stand up to the gun lobby?
