I just reintroduced my universal background checks bill. It’s not complicated — if you want to buy a gun, you should have to pass a background check.

Last year, for the first time in 30 years, we passed a comprehensive gun safety bill. It included a provision requiring more gun sellers to conduct background checks, but it was far short of the universal requirement that we need. So we need to keep up the momentum from that victory. That starts today with this bill.

Background checks are easy, and they are fast — usually less than 5 minutes.

The only place this idea is controversial is in the halls of Congress. Seriously. There are few things that have this level of support from the public — 90% of Americans are with us.

Not even kittens are that popular.

With such overwhelming bipartisan support from the public, Congress should have no problem passing this bill, but some of my colleagues still feel more pressure from gun manufacturers than from the American people.

That’s where our movement comes in. We’ve built a national political infrastructure that can finally rival the gun lobby. Our movement has fundamentally reshaped the debate on this issue.

We won a major victory last year, but our work is not done. We have to come together and raise our voices to keep the pressure on my colleagues. You’re either with us or you’re with the gun lobby.

Sign my petition right now to tell my colleagues that you support universal background checks and want to see us pass this bill today. It should not take more lost lives to get Congress to act.
