Every year, Congresswoman Lucy McBath pens a letter to her son Jordan on his birthday. You can read this year’s letter below.

Dear Jordan,

I used to look forward to February 16th for weeks. Handing you presents, watching you blow out the candles on your cake, and giving you a big hug would make my heart soar. When I close my eyes, I can still see the way your smile would light up the room you were in.

Today, you would have turned 28. You’d be a grown man building a life for yourself. By now you’d have a career, and maybe even a family of your own.

But now, your birthday is one of the hardest days of the year for me. Since you were stolen from me – when you were just a 17-year-old kid – I haven’t been able to celebrate this milestone with you. I didn’t get to say goodbye or get any other notice of how my world would be turned upside down. All because a man with a gun made an impulsive decision to pull the trigger at you and your friends.

I wanted to watch you turn 18. I wanted to attend your graduations, and cheer you on as you entered the adult world. There was always part of me that thought you’d go into public service. You always cared so deeply about serving the communities around you.

Jordan, I miss you every single day. And your memory keeps me motivated in my role as a Congresswoman to keep fighting so that no other family will have to go through what we did. All I want is to honor your legacy by stopping the senseless acts of gun violence that took your life and the lives of so many others.

I don’t know where you’d be in life had you not been murdered, but I know one thing for sure: I would be so proud of the man you’d be today. And I hope you’d be proud of me too.
