I wanted to let you know that we’ve added a really exciting speaker to the line-up of our Resisting Monopoly Capitalism activist conference.
We're going to be joined by João Paulo Rodrigues, one of the leaders of Brazil’s Landless Workers Movement, a huge social movement which has won land redistribution for literally hundreds of thousands of landless people through land occupations. They’re fighting for food sovereignty in the face of agribusiness power.
The corporate-dominated food sector has a huge carbon footprint, and like other aspects of monopoly capitalism, concentrates huge power and wealth in the hands of a few. Just two companies control 40% of the global seed market, while between 2020 and 2022, 62 people became ‘food billionaires’. In one of the sessions, Ronnie Hall from food campaigners ETC Group will join João to discuss how agriculture is increasingly dominated by a few huge corporations and how people are fighting back.

Other international speakers who will be joining us include Julia Kosgei from Kenya, a policy adviser to the People’s Vaccine Alliance; Parminder Jeet Singh, co-director of IT for Change in India; Nick Shaxson, author of tax haven takedown Treasure Islands, and Finance Curse; and Aurélie Trouvé, the parliamentary chair of France’s left opposition coalition NUPES.
About this event
In this conference, we will discuss and unpack what monopoly capitalism is, how it creates inequality and injustice, and explore ways to fight back and organise for a different world.
As agriculture, energy, tech, pharmaceuticals and finance corporations rake it in as never before while ordinary people around the world face austerity and a cost of living crisis, we think now is the right time to bring people together to face the power corporations head on.
