Haven’t you heard? Climate pollution is the new smoking.

We already knew that getting people to stop smoking is necessary to reducing cancer risks in our communities, but a new study from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that eliminating tobacco use has negligible effects in places of high pollution — just take a look at Allegheny County, PA.

The region encompassing Pittsburgh has some of the worst air quality in the country. Building on previous studies, researchers discovered that even if everyone in the county stopped smoking 20 years ago, the lung cancer rates would’ve only dropped by 11 percent. For comparison, the average cancer reduction for all 612 Pennsylvania counties included in the study would’ve seen a 62 percent drop in that same timeline.

That’s no coincidence. These results prove there’s something else driving up cancer rates in places like Allegheny County, and air pollution is the number one culprit.
