Friend,
Ten years ago today, the Supreme Court made a disastrous decision in the Citizens United case that has had deep, damaging and lasting impacts on our politics ever since.
The Citizens United decision meant that billionaires and corporations could pour unlimited sums of money into influencing our elections, all while calling it “free speech.” And they can do it all in secret. They don’t have to disclose who was giving, how much was being spent, or what it was being spent on.
The fight against dark money in politics started right here in Montana, and we are all very proud of this. Before Citizens United, Montana had some of the strictest campaign finance laws in the country -- and after, we were the only state to defend our law prohibiting corporate contributions. But, we haven’t succeeded in taking this horrible decision off of the books -- yet.
Our GOP Senator Steve Daines has come to depend on this dirty corporate money, accepting nearly $800,000 in corporate contributions so far this cycle. And if that weren’t enough, the billionaire Koch network has signaled that they’re ready and willing to bankroll his re-election campaign.
When I’m in the Senate, I will serve the people of Montana, not corporate special interests with battalions of lobbyists. That’s why I’m not accepting a dollar from corporate PACs during this campaign. Montanans deserve leaders who will fight to put their families first -- and that’s exactly what I am going to do.
Thank you,
Cora Neumann
