Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Galveston and Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Belton are among 35 recipients nationwide of the National Trust for Historic Preservation?s Preserving Black Churches grant program. These and other community cornerstones like them across the state are key elements in preserving Black heritage in Texas.

In a simple frame building in spring 1836, 59 delegates met to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. Today, a replica of that Independence Hall stands at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, where an annual celebration will take place Feb. 25-26.
The free event features live music, food, living history presentations, musket and cannon firings, kids? activities, and other commemorative programs. Come see an authentic Texas Army camp where visitors can wander freely among the tents to learn how soldiers and their families experienced life in 1836.
The Bush Family Home?Midland residence of an exceptional political family who shaped state and national politics in the late 20th and early 21st centuries?is now a Texas Historical Commission state historic site.
Formerly known as the George W. Bush Childhood Home, the site opened as a museum in 2006 after a ribbon cutting attended by former President George H.W. Bush and First Ladies Barbara Bush and Laura Bush.
