What's Happening at the Center
In his New York Times piece, Jerry Kammer makes the liberal case for restricting immigration. He explains that when immigration is poorly managed, as it is right now, it causes social division and harms the most vulnerable. Like capitalism itself, it should be regulated in the national interest, not shaped to serve the free-market libertarianism of the right or the post-national humanitarianism of the left. Kammer traces the shift on the left over the years from a commitment to the rule of law and limits on immigration to an anti-borders position, justified under the banner of inclusiveness, equality, human rights, racial reconciliation and reparations for American interventions in the third world. But unfortunately, like factions on the right, tribal passions have warped the judgment of many on the left.
