John,
Being mayor of a major city isn’t an easy job. You're constantly debating what’s best for all your constituents. You have a budget to balance, which means making hard choices. You are constantly in the spotlight – so every move you make is picked apart.
When you are an out LGBTQ mayor, it certainly doesn’t become any easier. There’s homophobia, double standards and the knowledge that you are a role model for young LGBTQ people. I was the first out LGBTQ mayor of a major American city, which added some pressure as well.
But it is the impact an LGBTQ mayor can make for their city and for the country that has me so excited about five other lesbian mayors running for office this year. Leslie Herod can shatter a glass ceiling as the first woman elected as mayor of Denver, CO while Aja Owens will be the first out LGBTQ mayor of Jennings, MO. Our previous historic firsts - Lori Lightfoot, Jane Castor and Satya Rhodes-Conway - are running for reelection.
Each of these phenomenal women are on the ballot right now – Lori and Satya both have February elections. Donate today to support their campaigns and make 2023 the Year of the Lesbian Mayor! [[link removed]]

There’s no doubt that each of these women has what it takes to lead. Satya, Lori and Jane all led their cities through the COVID-19 pandemic. Leslie has been a tireless advocate for all during her time in the Colorado legislature, prioritizing LGBTQ lives, social justice reform, addressing the mental health crisis and more. And Aja has spent her career pioneering public programing serving the unhoused, local youth and senior citizens.
We need more LGBTQ women in office, especially LGBTQ women mayors. So help us get them elected! Pitch in today to power their campaigns and make 2023 the Year of the Lesbian Mayor! [[link removed]]
