A collection of opportunities for educators in and around Philadelphia Presidents Day at the Center Presidents Day Monday, February 20 Free admission, courtesy of TD Bank The National Constitution Center celebrates Presidents Day with a variety of in-person and virtual events and resources exploring Article II of the Constitution, the role of the executive branch, and the individuals who have held the office of the president throughout American history. RESERVE TICKETS Black History Month Celebrate Black History Month at the Center All February long In celebration of Black History Month, the National Constitution Center recognizes the achievements and rich heritage of African Americans, and the impact their stories have had on constitutional history, with discounted museum admission and special on-site programming, including scholarly talks and a special self-guided highlights tour, as well as virtual events and online educational resources through the month of February. First Amendment and Freedom Fighters Tour Wednesday, February 22 |12 p.m. Friday, February 24 |1 p.m. ET Celebrate Black History Month with free virtual exhibit tours highlighting freedom fighters who used the power of the First Amendment to gain freedom for themselves and ensure it for others. Learners can take a virtual tour of our Civil War and Reconstruction exhibit, explore the First Amendment tablet, and examine how the history of the First Amendment has played hand-in- hand with the civil rights movement. REGISTER: WEDNESDAY, FEB. 22 REGISTER: FRIDAY, FEB. 24 Wawa Community Day Honoring Black History Month Saturday, February 25 Free Admission Courtesy of Wawa In celebration of Black History Month, Wawa and the National Constitution Center are teaming up to offer visitors a FREE Wawa Community Day on Saturday, February 25. Wawa Innovation Network associate volunteers will serve hot beverages, pretzels, and pastries from 1–4 p.m., as supplies last, from Wawa’s Community Care Vehicle. Visit our website for a full schedule of online and on-site programming for Wawa Community Day. Constitutional Ambassador Program Celebrate Women’s History With a Field Trip to the Center! Bring your students to the Center to participate in a free Constitutional Ambassadors Program to learn how the women’s suffrage movement used their First Amendment freedoms to fight for equality . During the program, students will explore the historical context and the drafting of the First Amendment—focusing especially on the factors motivating America’s Founding generation. Students will also examine various types of speech, including symbolic speech, hate speech, and political speech. Students will also explore how many groups who were denied rights used the First Amendment to fight for equality, and in celebration of Women’s History Month, we’ll look closer at the women’s suffrage movement, and explore how its members used the freedoms of speech, press, assembly, and petition to help secure the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Admission: Free! Transportation funding available. Availability: Weekdays Timing: Program lasts about two hours, with the schedule planned by the National Constitution Center Schedule Information: Every CAP includes: an introduction by one of the Center's educators a Scholar Exchange session where a scholar discusses the historical background and context of the chosen topic exhibit exploration a civil dialogue facilitated by a trained museum educator the opportunity to watch Freedom Rising, a live theatrical experience BOOK NOW For Educators Professional Learning Opportunity: Voting Rights in America Wednesday, March 15 | 6:30–8 p.m. ET In this session, participants explore the right to vote through American history and work to answer several key questions about voting rights in America. Where does the Constitution protect the right to vote? What role did the amendment process play in shaping voting rights? What has the Supreme Court said about the right to vote over time? We will also look at important ways to engage students in civil dialogue about current events and modern questions. REGISTER Summer Educator Institute Applications Applications are available until February 24, 2023 The Center's education team is thrilled to offer four professional learning opportunities for educators this July—including two virtual workshops and two in-person institutes. Apply for one of these programs and join teachers from across the country to engage with ideologically diverse constitutional scholars. Learn more National History Day: Philadelphia Competition March 15–16, 2023 This March, the National Constitution Center will host the NHD Philly Citywide Competition. National History Day is a yearlong academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for middle and high school students. Students prepare original projects, such as a documentaries, exhibits, essays, performances, or websites, along the way gaining real-world experience conducting historical research and analysis of primary sources.
