John –

Voters have given Republicans complete power over state government - from the state Legislature to the governor’s mansion to the state judiciary. Yet the Legislature continues to put Democrats in powerful positions as committee chairs. This means Democrats have a lot of control over which bills become law.

For months, Texans have been calling on Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dade Phelan to take action. Thousands of citizens traveled to the Capitol to make their voices heard. Last month, Patrick responded by only appointing one Democrat – Houston’s John Whitmire – to continue serving as a committee chairman. Patrick said Whitmire will be the last one.

Last week, Speaker Phelan released the new committee assignments for the current session. He appointed nine Democrats as powerful chairmen, including those overseeing business regulation and youth health.

It’s not all bad news, as conservatives made some headway. Last session, 13 Democrats chaired committees.

Don’t get me wrong: This is not some great victory. The grassroots will not have won this battle until there are zero Democrat committee chairman.

But when citizens like you make their voices heard, a difference can be made. And while committee chairs are important, the policy results are what actually matter.

Now is not the time to let up. Texans must continue to fight for their priorities this session if we have any hope of advancing freedom and liberty in Texas.
