Some are calling the railroad derailment in Ohio — and the government’s
shameful response — one of the worst environmental disasters in decades.

Railroad workers have been warning us about this for years, but the
powerful political establishment, run by its corporate donors, has done
nothing. This disaster is the result of the railroad corporations’
intentional neglect and they must be held accountable.

We must demand our government put people over profit, reign in these
industries, and finally listen to the communities most at risk.

Railroad companies have held workers hostage in protracted negotiations
for years over the most basic changes to their contracts while allowing
their standards to fall, forcing fewer workers to do more work, and
cutting corners at every turn to save costs. And this is all while making
record profits — we’re talking about billions of dollars.

Let’s be clear: workers knew this was coming, and now communities in Ohio
will suffer the toxic effects of this derailment for years to come because
companies decided cutting corners was more important than public safety.
If we don’t act now, it could happen again. It’s on us to stand up and
demand the political establishment finally hold the railroad industry
accountable.
