Too many ideologues have already gone to extreme lengths to maintain power against the wishes of the American people through the use of partisan and racial gerrymandering. Now, they are going even further to achieve their unpopular political aims.

North Carolina Republicans are attempting to use their state’s highest court to reverse an established precedent that resulted in fair maps. If you're already familiar with Harper v. Hall, you know that our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, initiated this landmark case that struck down gerrymandered congressional and state legislative maps.

The North Carolina Supreme Court has consistently sided with fair maps as recently as just a few weeks ago. But these extreme Republicans cynically think that the new court majority will now side with them — not because they have a better case, but because some of the justices belong to their political party.

I'll cut right to the chase -- if the North Carolina Supreme Court reverses decisions made - by the same court - as recently as weeks ago, it will do irreversible damage to the judicial branch.

Republicans in North Carolina are hoping to use the Court to attain their ultimate goal: to gerrymander with impunity. We can’t let that happen. We need supporters like you to help us keep up the fight for fairness and voter protection.

Can you contribute to All On The Line today to help our work to safeguard our democracy against this brazen attempt to undermine judicial independence? >> [link removed]

Justices are supposed to serve as independent jurists. Overturning a decision made just a few weeks ago would be an action so baldly political that it would rightly call into question the legitimacy of the state’s highest court.

This will weaken our system of checks and balances. State supreme courts have been one of the last lines of defense against gerrymandering and voter suppression laws passed by Republican-controlled state legislatures.

Help us defend American democracy, fair maps, and voter protection laws. Give $10, $20, or $50 if you’re able – whatever amount works for you. If there was ever a time to help us, that time is now. >> [link removed]
