Join NORML

John,

Now is our time.

I want to thank you for supporting NORML in our mutual fight to end our nation’s failed and disastrous war on marijuana consumers. Here at NORML, we are funded by modest grassroots donations from supporters like you, not money from large special interests or industry players. This enables us to ensure an unrelenting commitment to our mission to represent only the interests of responsible cannabis consumers. This is the mission we committed to when NORML was founded in 1970, and thanks to our thousands of members, one we are still committed to today. It is also a mission that has become all the more important in the age of legalization when legislative and policy discussions at the state and federal levels are becoming more and more dominated by well paid lobbyists and outside interest groups.

Thanks to NORML’s efforts, public opinion continues to grow in support of ending marijuana prohibition, with two-thirds of adults — including majorities of self-identified Democrats, Republicans, and independents — now in favor of making the plant legal. Alongside growing public support, politicians, including those at some of the highest levels of government, are now recognizing the rapidly changing cultural and legal status of cannabis. After an incredibly successful 2019, we are seeing public and political support continue to increase in 2020 as more and more states implement sensible cannabis regulatory policies.

Not only is 2020 poised to be a momentous year for marijuana law reform, it also marks the 50th anniversary of NORML’s founding. As we enter our sixth decade of existence, the shared values that we founded this organization on in 1970 are only more relevant than ever. Despite all of our progress, over 600,000 Americans are still being arrested every year for marijuana possession. While many of us are now privileged to live in states that have legalized cannabis for adults, far too many are still suffering immensely under the oppressive regime of marijuana prohibition, and we cannot relent in our fight until no American is treated as a criminal for consuming a substance objectively safer than currently legal alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical drugs. Even after we acheive legalization, there are still countless issues NORML will tackle including those related to employment, housing discrimination, product safety and testing, overly aggressive taxation, and more. I feel confident that as we continue to stand shoulder to shoulder in this struggle, these are fights we can and will win.

Together, we’re going to continue to accomplish great things. We deeply appreciate your support and hard work as we inch closer to cannabis freedom nationwide.

Solidarity,
Erik Altieri
NORML Executive Director
