Ahead Of Print: Competition In US Generic Drug Market

In a new article released ahead of print today
<[link removed]>,
Mariana P. Socal and coauthors examine the competition and
vulnerabilities in the global supply chain for US generic active
pharmaceutical ingredients.

The authors use data from Clarivate Analytics' Cortellis Generics
Intelligence database to analyze generic active pharmaceutical
ingredients   (APIs) produced globally for the US market during
2020-21.

Socal and coauthors find that "the U.S. manufactures only about 14
percent of APIs necessary for the domestic generic drug market" with
India, China, and Italy being the largest API manufacturers.

The authors argue for two key actions to strengthen the supply of APIs
in critical markets:

* Improved monitoring of API manufacturing

* Enhancing incentives for domestic production of priority APIs.
