Richmond, VA- Leon Benjamin is a proud proponent of The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
"IDEA" is a civil rights law that was created by Congress to protect students with disabilities and their families, not exploit them for financial gain.
Leon was disappointed to know that in Hampton, Virginia, a case is being waged against Hampton City Schools regarding the unfair treatment of a child with disabilities.
This lawsuit is part of a much bigger lawsuit being waged in Fairfax County Public Schools for similar reasons.
Leon Benjamin said in a statement on Tuesday:
"As your next Congressman, I will fight to hold School Administrators accountable to the law.
The allegations in this lawsuit are shocking to the conscience and require immediate action by the Virginia Department of Education, the US Attorney General, and the Virginia State Bar.
Families of students with disabilities are entitled to a fair process and a good education. The national average for services provided to students with individualized education plans (IEP) is 30%, while the average in Virginia is only 3%.
Under no circumstances should we allow violations of the due process safeguards in terms of special education. We need to stop the violations of parental rights and demand a fair system that improves educational outcomes.
I encourage parents, politicians, and other community leaders to demand an investigation by the US Attorney general and remove profit-driven attorneys with questionable ethics from representing this case.
We need to do better for our children, and I plan on doing that as the next Congressman for the 4th District."
