Friend,
Our democracy is still up for the highest bidder.
Ten years ago today, the Supreme Court opened the floodgates for the wealthy elite to buy up our elections.
The infamous Citizens United vs FEC decision allowed those with fat wallets to inject money into politics at a rate we had never seen before.

These special interests, with the help of super PACS, could now raise and spend unlimited sums of money to elect the legislators that they favor.
Once elected, those legislators would return the favor by passing laws that favor those rich donors.
Citizens United is why the wealthy few were able to spend a whopping $2.9 billion in federal elections between 2010 and 2018.
Meanwhile, everyday Americans who struggle with unaffordable prescription drugs, student loan debt, the opioid epidemic and other issues are left on the sidelines.

Fortunately, Americans are fighting to reclaim their democracy.
20 states, including Maine, have called for an amendment to the Constitution to overturn Citizens United.
When I am U.S. Senator, I will propose an amendment that goes a step further.
My amendment will confine all money-raising, debates, and political ads to a 60-day window prior to election day. Candidates will finance their elections through a combination of public financing and individual voter contributions.

I’m running to make the impossible possible. And I’m doing it in the only way I know how: no fancy fundraisers, no corporate PAC money, no high-powered lobbyists, and no big money of any kind.
This is a people-powered movement that begins and ends with you. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
In Solidarity,
