John, yesterday marked five years since my little girl, Jaime, was killed by a gunman armed with a military-style assault weapon. At just 14 years old, my daughter was hunted as she ran down the halls of her school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
In an instant Jaime's life was cut painfully short. She will never perform at another dance recital, glowing with pride. She'll never graduate from high school or go off to college. She'll never be able to follow her dreams to become a pediatric physical therapist. My daughter's future was taken from her five years ago. I can't change that. But I can fight with everything I've got so that no more of our children are ripped away from us by weapons of war.
In these five difficult years since Jaime was killed, I have dedicated myself to advocating for stronger gun violence prevention laws – laws that will keep our communities, our schools, and our children safe. But real change only happens when we all come together to fight for it.
That's why I'm emailing you today: To mark the five years since the Parkland shooting, I'm helping Brady reach 5,000 responses on their assault weapon survey. Brady is leading this fight at all levels – in Congress, in the courts, and in hundreds of communities – but they're counting on people like you to join them. So please, before their survey deadline at midnight tonight, will you respond to show Washington that Americans are ready for change?

Do you think Congress should ban assault weapons?

The five years since we lost Jaime have gone by so fast – but at the same time they've lasted a lifetime. I'll never stop wishing I could hear Jaime's laugh again and watch her grow up into the beautiful woman she was already becoming. That pain and loss will never leave our family. But after years of fighting for strong gun safety laws, I have hope today.

I know that Americans are ready for these reforms. Now, we have to raise our voices and force Congress to hear us. So I am personally asking you to get off the sidelines of this fight and join me. Please, will you respond to this survey right now to fight for a safer future for our children?
