We are living through an historic time.
When I was sworn into office as your Senator, I took an oath to uphold our Constitution and rule of law. Last fall, after learning about the President's actions to get Ukraine to interfere in our elections for his personal political benefit, I came to the decision that the House should begin impeachment proceedings. We had no choice but to follow the facts, and establish whether the President abused his power and put his own interests ahead of the security of our nation and the rule of law.
The House has impeached the President, and now the Senate begins a trial to determine if he should be removed from office. My duty to you and our democracy remains the same: To uphold the Constitution and rule of law, and the principle that no one is above the law. As a member of the Senate, I swear an oath to "do impartial justice, according to the constitution and the law" and I take this oath seriously. The Senate must hold a fair trial, and that includes witnesses and evidence. Whatever happens, I will fulfill my duty, and make a judgment based on my job as a juror charged with providing impartial justice.
