One of the highlights of President Biden’s historically successful first two years has been celebrating the dignity of labor and the contributions of labor unions in furthering economic justice. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, who was essential in furthering those efforts, will be stepping aside. Therefore, his natural successor should be Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su, who has dedicated her career to the promotion of workers' rights and fair labor practices. Before serving in Biden’s Department of Labor, she was California’s Labor Secretary under Governor Newsom and headed California's Division of Labor Standards Enforcement under Governor Jerry Brown. Su’s decades of experience and dedication to labor rights are essential for heading the Department of Labor.
In the meantime, key fundraiser and former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair, Sean Patrick Maloney, thinks he should get the job. But that would be an iconic example of letting white men fail upwards, since he’s the first DCCC chair to lose re-election to his own seat in forty years, and some of his biggest failures were in his home state, deep blue New York. Moreover, he is politically aligned with the corporate-donor class, which has a long history of antagonism to labor. There is no shortage of cabinet positions headed by corporate-friendly appointees; shouldn't there be at least one headed by someone who is labor-friendly?
Tell the President and our senators: ([link removed]) We want Julie Su as Secretary of Labor to continue the great work of celebrating the dignity of work and reigniting the crucial role labor unions play in our democracy.
