Revisiting the Black Voices Issue of the Journal: How philanthropy has (and hasn’t) changed

To honor Black History Month, we asked contributors Steven Casey, Roland Kennedy, Jr., and Genise Singleton to reflect on the Journal’s candid assessment of the Black professional experience in philanthropy, the progress that has been made in the past three years, and what still needs to be done.

PEAK Peer Network Spotlight

PEAK offers members diverse peer spaces for learning, sharing, and evolving in our thriving chapters and peer groups, which include caucuses, affinity groups, communities of practice, and working groups. Each month, we look forward to showcasing the meaningful programming and networking taking place in these volunteer-run spaces.

Last month, PEAK Midwest hosted their first book talk with a discussion centered on Inclusion on Purpose by Ruchika Tulshyan. Members gathered to share what resonated most and how they plan to implement some of the recommendations made by the author. Although organizational shifts can be daunting, these members are committed to leading by example by shifting their individual practices to “meaningfully promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

And this month, PEAK Mideast and Grantmakers of Western Pennsylvania reunited for “Using Data to Assess Your Grantmaking Practice,” a roundtable that discussed progress members made following a November session where they learned how to build competencies in strategic management, technology management and knowledge management. Participants shared the changes they’ve made thus far and sought guidance and feedback on how to overcome some of the challenges they face when deciding which data to collect and how to use it to inform their grantmaking practices.

PEAK In Community

Here’s the latest on how PEAK is actively engaging with the larger philanthropic community and leading the way in advancing effective, equitable, and values-centered grantmaking practices.

On January 19, President and CEO Satonya Fair joined fellow members of the Clinton School of Public Service’s inaugural Racial Healing Certification cohort for their convocation in Little Rock, Arkansas. Established in partnership with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the groundbreaking program offers training and academic credentials for leaders in philanthropy who want to bring racial healing practices into their organizations.

While in Little Rock, Satonya met with Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation staff to delve into emergent learning using insights from the latest Journal, PEAK's Emergent Learning Playbook.

Membership and Community Engagement Director Sara Sanders joined Walton Family Foundation Executive Director Caryl M. Stern and her team along with other leaders from philanthropy-supporting organizations and nonprofits for a grantee dinner to discuss the critical role of collaboration across sectors and with the communities we serve.

Satonya and Sara, along with PEAK colleagues Clare Larson and Nichia McFarlane, joined the Wellspring Philanthropic Fund’s grants management team for a virtual gathering centered on discussing how to implement equitable grantmaking practices and lead from wherever you sit within the organization.

Satonya kicked off two 2023 webinar series. She joined GivingData’s Roberto Cremonini to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the year ahead. She also spoke with Catchafire’s Guenevere Crum about how grantmakers can better support nonprofit partners by leveraging internal strategies, board relationships, and outgoing grants to create capacity-building strategies.

PEAK is proud to be an early supporter of the just-launched Demographics via Candid, the organization’s data-driven initiative to advance equitable grantmaking practices. In addition to joining yesterday’s launch event, Satonya shared the following with the Associated Press: “We’re excited to just be an amplifier for what makes sense and to change things that don’t. Nonprofits already have a lot of work. Don’t make your process be the thing instead of the core of their mission.”
