In case you missed it: Groundbreaking verdict in Brisa’s case against Bolivia

On January 19, 2022, the IACtHR announced the verdict of Brisa De Angulo Losada v. Bolivia in favor of Brisa. The ruling found the Bolivian government responsible for violating Brisa’s rights when she was unable to find justice in the country’s courts. The groundbreaking judgment reflects and reinforces regional and international standards in the area of sexual violence against girls and adolescents. Galvanising the global movement to end FGM

Every year, on February 6, activists around the world observe International Day of Zero Tolerance for female genital mutilation (FGM) to amplify and direct the efforts on the elimination of FGM.

Liberia is one of only four countries in Africa where the practice is prevalent that have yet to specifically criminalize FGM. In a groundbreaking declaration made on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, Chief Zanzan, the Chairperson of the National Council of Chiefs and Elders, declared, “By the power vested in me by all the Paramount Chiefs of the 15 political divisions in Liberia and signed by myself… FGM is banned in Liberia.”

Equality Now will continue working with partners to advocate for an anti-FGM law in Liberia, building on the momentum caused by the Chief’s declaration.

Africa Gender Equality Moot Court: Women’s economic and political rights in the digital space

Our Africa office successfully hosted the final rounds of the 2022-2023 Africa Gender Equality Moot Court Competition. The competition brought together participants from across Africa to foster and cultivate interest in the rights of women and girls in Africa, and the role continental and international human rights instruments play in the enforcement, promotion, and protection of these rights among the next generation of legal practitioners on the continent.

At Equality Now, we believe in advocating for the development and implementation of progressive laws in alignment with international law and standards and fostering environments that respect women and girls through feminist, human rights, and evidence-based advocacy.
