** NICE urges doctors to document drinking habits correctly
------------------------------------------------------------
Around 600,000 people in the UK are alcohol-dependent and could benefit from professional alcohol treatment. However, many people who could benefit from alcohol treatment aren’t receiving it.

Alcohol Change UK has welcomed new draft guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), urging family doctors and health workers to ensure people's drinking habits are correctly recorded.

** Calls to allow shops to use AI to verify age for alcohol sales
------------------------------------------------------------
The British Retail Consortium has called on the UK Government to legislate to allow the use of age estimation technology to verify customers’ age for sales of alcohol. Recent trials by the Home Office and Office for Product Safety and Standards, using the technology in stores at five retailers across the UK, found customers were happy to use it when purchasing alcohol, and there were no reported incidents of underage purchases of age-restricted items.

** New drinking guidelines in Canada
------------------------------------------------------------
Health authorities in Canada released new guidelines on alcohol this month, recommending 1-2 standard drinks per week as “low risk”. Previous guidelines were 10 drinks a week for women and 15 for men. The guidelines, issued by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, aim “to support people in making informed decisions about their health.” Proposals have also been made for the mandatory warning labels of all alcoholic beverages.
