** Wolverhampton: Review of harm caused by gambling addictions

In October 2019, Public Health England, as formerly known, produced its Gambling Related Harms (GRH) Evidence Review report, which identified that 24.5 million people in England gambled – 54 per cent of the adult population, or 40 per cent excluding the National Lottery.

In a report to Wolverhampton Council’s residents, housing and communities scrutiny panel, health improvement officer Ryan Hollings said: “The review estimated that 0.5 per cent of the adult population has a problem with gambling, 3.8 per cent are gambling at ‘at-risk’ levels and 7 per cent are affected negatively by another person’s gambling.

“The council recognised GRH as a public health issue having undertaken the rapid needs assessment. As part of the council’s financial wellbeing strategy, it recognised factors such as the economic downturn, cost of living crisis and the impact of Covid-19, alongside historically high levels of deprivation, must steer a renewed focus on debt, poverty and promoting financial wellbeing in Wolverhampton.”

The council is due to discuss the report on Thursday.

** Bags of illegal cigarettes and vapes seized from shops in Loughborough and Melton

A number of shops were raided in the two towns as part of an operation across Trading Standards, Immigration, and Leicestershire Police.

Bags of illegal cigarettes, tobacco, and vapes have been seized after raids in shops across Loughborough and Melton. Leicestershire Police, working with Trading Standards, immigration officers and Leicestershire search dogs, raided a number of shops that were suspected of selling illegal smoking and vaping products on Thursday, February 9.

Leicestershire's Trading Standards department also shared an update. They wrote: "During the operation yesterday, we seized a large quantity of illegal cigarettes and vapes. Illegal tobacco is linked to underage sales to children, creates an unfair trading environment for law-abiding businesses and plays a part in organised crime linked to people trafficking and drug smuggling."
