What’s at Stake for the U.S. in Ukraine - Russia’s continuing assault on Ukraine is a brutal reminder that war remains a feature of international relations. The U.S. and its allies can best support Ukraine by ensuring the continued flow of munitions, expanding Ukraine’s inventory of artillery, providing armor to enable offensive operations, improving defensive capabilities against enemy ground and air attack, and enhancing Ukraine’s ability to understand what the enemy is doing, so that it can make the best use of its resources. Ohio Train Derailment Disaster Reinforces Need For More Pipelines - This frightening incident should lead us to reexamine our pipeline priorities. Although the chemicals on the train could not move by pipeline, pipelines are used for natural gas and petroleum—and we need more of them. Pipelines are the safest way to transport oil and natural gas because the pipeline stays still and the gas moves, away from people, with little risk of accident. New technology shows pipeline operators if there is a pinhole leak in a pipe, and sophisticated pressure gauges can signal if oil pressure is declining. Heritage Expert: Diana Furchtgott-Roth
Protecting Parents’ Rights with the Given Name Act - K–12 schools across the country, including in deeply conservative areas, have started addressing children by names that are not theirs, and using pronouns that differ from their sex—without their parents’ knowledge or consent. Parents know their children best, and their authority should not be superseded by teachers and school administrators. Schools should not make potentially life-altering decisions for a child behind parents’ backs. Lawmakers can support parental rights by enacting legislation, such as the Given Name Act, proposed by The Heritage Foundation. Heritage Expert: Jason Bedrick and Jonathan Butcher
Washington’s Reckless Spending Continues to Imperil Americans’ Financial Futures - For the last three years, Congress has spent trillions of dollars that we simply don’t have. The Federal Reserve created the money to finance those unprecedented levels of spending, which caused inflation. As the Federal Reserve belatedly acts to rein in inflation, it continues to work at cross-purposes to Congress, which continues to overspend. The more Congress overspends, the tighter the Federal Reserve will have to squeeze the private economy to bring down inflation, increasing the risk of slowing the economy even further. It is imperative that Congress begin cutting spending immediately. The explosion of deficits and debt over the last three years have put the federal budget in a precarious position where rising interest rates will automatically add an additional $300 billion to the next budget,” said EJ Antoni, research fellow in regional economics with The Heritage Foundation. South Dakota’s New Law to Protect Children Should Inspire More States to Follow Suit - Jay Richards, director of the DeVos Center for Life, Religion, and Family at The Heritage Foundation, made the following statement: “The tragic story of Chloe Cole—who identified as transgender and submitted to surgery she later regretted—should be an alarm to all parents. Gender ideologues have infiltrated the federal government, the medical industry, and many of our public schools. They are promoting a harmful ideology that creates confusion and distress in children. There’s no solid scientific evidence that the benefits of these so-called ‘treatments’ exceed the risks for children with gender distress. And yet gender ideologues push such kids into a school-to-sterilization pipeline—kids who are not old enough to understand the permanent damage this can do to their bodies and minds.” Heritage Expert: Jay Richards
The United States, Italy, and Winning the Med - Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine is grabbing all the attention. But we need to look South, too. Neither the European Union nor NATO will be the strategic leaders in the Greater Mediterranean. Washington and Rome will have to play that role. Heritage Expert: Jim Carafano
House Republicans Demand Answers on CDC’s New Database to Monitor Why Americans Didn’t Take Covid-19 Vaccine - House Republicans sent a letter Tuesday to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, demanding answers about a new classification system that allows the CDC to record the reasons why Americans refused to take one of the COVID-19 vaccines. “Naturally, we are concerned about the federal government gathering data on Americans’ personal choices—data that serves no sincere purpose in treating patients’ medical conditions—and how it may be used in the future,” the Republican lawmakers, led by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, wrote. Heritage Expert: Tyler O’Neil
Defense Expert Provides Chilling Insight Into US-China Relations After Spy Balloon Incident - Now, the U.S. might be facing a situation with China that could be more dangerous than at any moment in the Cold War, in the wake of the shooting down Feb. 4 of a Chinese spy balloon after it flew over U.S. territory. “Well, one of the more concerning reports out of this whole thing is the fact that the Pentagon rang up their buddies over in China, a hotline, and said, ‘We’re concerned about this thing, whatever it is,’ and nobody on the Chinese side answered the phone,” Dakota Wood, senior research fellow in defense programs in The Heritage Foundation’s Center for National Defense, says on today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast.” Heritage Expert: Dakota Wood
