Free Speech For People

John,

Ten years ago today, the Supreme Court reversed a century of legal precedent that barred corporate money in our elections. And, the Court extended into the political process the dangerous fiction that corporations are people with constitutional rights.

The consequences have been severe. Since the "Citizens United "decision, we have seen an explosion of new spending in our elections by big money and corporate interests, drowning out the voices of American voters. Meanwhile, corporations are continually pushing to expand even further the fabricated doctrine of corporate constitutional rights. McDonald's tried to reverse a living wage law in Seattle, claiming that it violated their Fourteenth Amendment right to equal protection under the law. Monsanto challenged a Vermont GMO labeling law on the assertion that they have a First Amendment right not to speak. And ExxonMobil is trying to claim a First Amendment right to block state investigations into whether they committed consumer and securities fraud by hiding for decades scientific evidence that global warming is real and escalated by burning fossil fuels.

Corporations are seeking to capture the Constitution to rig elections and boost their bottom-line. Free Speech For People was founded on the day of the Supreme Court's "Citizens United" ruling in January 2010 to fight back.

We have worked for a decade to lift up the promise of a democracy in which all people can participate equally and meaningfully in the political process. We have sought to uphold and defend our core democratic principles and our Constitution --* beginning with the plain facts that corporations are not people and money is not speech.*

Through innovative and bold legal action, we have sought to end the big money dominance of our elections and to advance political equality for all. By pressing for a 28th Amendment to the Constitution, taking on super PACs in court, challenging foreign-corporate money in our elections, confronting corruption in the White House, fighting for election security, and much more, Free Speech For People is helping to lead the movement to reclaim our democracy for we, the people.

*We couldn't have done it without you. *Your contributions have helped us to catalyze the movement for a Constitutional amendment to overturn "Citizens United", fight back against fictitious claims of corporate constitutional rights, pursue cutting-edge litigation, advocate for landmark legislation, and challenge the most corrupt White House in history. Your ongoing support to Free Speech For People today will allow us to defend our democracy in 2020 and beyond, and ensure that all people have an equal voice and an equal vote.

*Free Speech For People will continue the fight for our democracy in the next decade and beyond. **"Will you join us?"* [ [link removed] ]

*The Supreme Court's" Citizens United" ruling marked a serious attack on our democracy, but we can save it. And, with your support, we will.* Thank you for all that you do for this fight. We truly appreciate your support of Free Speech For People, and together, we will defend our democracy and our Constitution.
