10 years ago today, the Supreme Court's disastrous Citizens United decision allowed an unprecedented amount of dark money to be spent on our elections and on fixed special interests instead of what's best for you and me and everyday Americans.
Under the Trump administration and current GOP leadership, we have continued to see dark money's devastating effects. Our country, our people and our environment suffer when special interests are placed before people.
It's time to fix what's broken in America. It's time to reverse Citizens United.
Citizens United must be overturned in order for us to get dark money out of politics and ensure elected officials represent their constituents, not just special interests. Action must be taken.
I've continuously supported efforts and co-sponsored legislation to overturn the ruling and restore much-needed limits on undisclosed money in politics, and I'm will continue to push the Senate and Mitch McConnell to take up bills the House has passed like H.R. 1 the "For the People Act" that reduce the influence of big money in politics and expand access to the ballot box.
Campaign finance reform, government accountability and ensuring our elections are free and fair for all will remain top priorities for me as I continue to serve the people of Southwest Connecticut in Congress. I will continue fighting to pass a Constitutional amendment to ensure our democracy is not for sale. Not today, not ever.
