Dear Friend, From the First Lady’s visit to San Diego to President Biden’s State of the Union address and my 34th birthday to introducing legislation to address the child care crisis, February has already been busy! Keep reading to learn about what I’ve been up to:

It was so great to have Angela de Joseph (a proud Lemon Grove resident!) as my guest to President Biden’s State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. Angela has dedicated her life to encouraging Black women to pursue careers in public service and to expanding access to health care and green technology. She represents the best of San Diego and I was so glad she could join me.

I loved welcoming Dr. Jill Biden to San Diego! It was so great to celebrate our progress made in expanding access to health care and supporting our service members, veterans, and military families. She’s an incredible partner, and I look forward to our continued work together – especially to help military families.

I’m so proud to serve as Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa during the 118th Congress. The African continent has long been ignored, neglected, and exploited by the international community, especially by the West, largely receiving attention in only the direst circumstances. I’m focused on building strong, lasting, and mutually beneficial partnerships with African countries that center African voices and advance our shared priorities.

When I’m home in San Diego, one of the top concerns I hear about is the high cost of child care. In fact, the average annual cost for child care for one infant in a licensed center in San Diego is more than $19,000! That’s far out of reach for most middle- and low-income families. And it’s not any easier for providers, who are in one of the lowest-paid professions in the country and struggle to make ends meet and keep their doors open.
That’s why I’m so proud to be leading the fight to change this. I introduced the Child Care for Every Community Act with Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. Our legislation would ensure that every family has access to high-quality, affordable child care and early learning opportunities by establishing a network of federally supported, locally run child care options across the country.

I’m so excited to serve as Vice Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus this term! As many of you know, LGBTQ+ issues are incredibly personal for me – as the sister of a trans brother and a gender non-conforming sibling. That’s why I’m so honored to hold this position so I can advocate for my siblings and the LGBTQ+ community in San Diego – and stand up to the flood of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, policies, and violence that’s sweeping the country.

Everyone – especially those who have served our country – should be able to afford a roof over their heads. But the cost of housing, especially in San Diego, has skyrocketed, helping to make San Diego County one of the largest populations of veterans experiencing homelessness in the country. That’s why I introduced the Return Home to Housing Act, bipartisan legislation to help provide more veterans with safe, transitional housing as we continue to push for housing that’s permanent, safe, and affordable. I will always fight for those willing to fight for us – and ensure they at least have the basics like housing that’s affordable, access to health care, and a good-paying job that values their skills.
