Celebrate Valentine's Day and Black History Month by sending love to some of our Black prochoice champions! Millicent Rogers: Durham County Board of Education - Consolidated District B. It is essential that every individual is given an opportunity to choose what is right for their body. We should affirm the choices around pregnancy, and empower people with the autonomy to make choices. People should have the choice to protect their own mental, physical, social, and emotional health. We all need options that give us the opportunity to keep ourselves from harm, poverty, struggles, and all the other things that come from unwanted and surprise pregnancies. Lisamarie Bristol: Gwinnett County Solicitor General. Having been blessed with 3 healthy, planned pregnancies with my husband in a safe, stable marriage, and home situation, I understand that I was fortunate to have the comforts that I did, including healthcare, during each of my pregnancies. I don’t have a dramatic story that I am going to share. I just understand that my story is not everyone else’s story. And each and every woman deserves to write her own story, for her own body, in her own way without the interference of political rhetoric. That is why I am prochoice. Because I know and understand that access to healthcare should not be barred by socioeconomic status. I am prochoice because going through pregnancy is challenging enough and there are enough hard decisions that need to be made, without interference. I am prochoice because reproductive health should be a fundamental right, not a privilege.Kerri Evelyn Harris: Delaware State House - District 32. All individuals and couples have the legal right to freely decide whether to reproduce, when to reproduce, and how best to maintain their sexual and reproductive health. This includes the right to plan the timing and spacing of their family, to prevent pregnancy through the use of contraceptives, to be fully educated about their sexual and reproductive health, to terminate a pregnancy, to be free from forced sterilization, and to have access to reproductive health services when necessary. Both nationally and at the state and local level I have been a consistent advocate for reproductive freedoms. Recently, I was arrested in DC as a result of my participation in an act of civil disobedience in protest to the Supreme Court case overturning Roe. In addition, I am founding board member of the First State Abortion Fund which was founded after the Supreme Court case.Amber M. Baker: North Carolina State House - District 72. As an educator, my initial motivation for running, was the continued defunding of public education, laws that were creating a pipeline to prison as well as censuring of what is taught in schools. I have to come to understand for my work in the community, there is a need for an advocate around human rights, social and criminal justice reform, access to affordable healthcare and workforce housing.It's never too late to send love to prochoice champions that embody the core work and principles of #VOTEPROCHOICE during Black History Month and beyond!
