Schools are a microcosm of our society and just like in our communities police and policing will not make our schools safer. In order to thrive, our students deserve investment in holistic supports—not security or police. That’s why we’re working with our partner, Tenants and Workers United, to ensure that all students in Alexandria, Virginia receive a high-quality education that meets their social, emotional, and academic needs.
The Alexandria City School Board is currently undergoing its budget process for 2024 fiscal year. The current proposal doesn’t come close to meeting the needs of students—despite young people calling for full funding of supportive staff like restorative justice practitioners and school-based mental health professionals. The budget makes minimal additions and includes no funding for social workers or health services personnel. Meanwhile, the School Board is considering a proposal to continue the harmful presence of school police after students fought for their removal in 2021.
This is unacceptable, and that's why our partners have launched a petition urging the Alexandria City Public School Board to fully fund a holistic approach to education that prioritizes students' well-being. |
