Tell Your Lawmakers: Limit Debt Collection on Traffic and Parking Tickets!
We all deserve access to the resources we need to meet our needs, no matter what.
However, something as simple as traffic and parking ticket debts can derail people’s lives when debt collectors seize their vehicles and garnish interest on debt from years-old unpaid tickets.
This session, Rep. Reeves has put forward HB 1651 that will protect people who drive cars by:
- Limiting debt collection and vehicle holds on traffic tickets that are more than 3 years old
- Giving people more time to pay their tickets when vehicle registration is dependent on ticket payment
- Providing more information and support about how to get a debt payment plan
- Limiting debt collection to municipalities or municipal contractors — preventing predatory debt buyers from profiting on people's hardship
HB 1651 would give people more time to pay their traffic and parking ticket debt before they lose access to their vehicle and increase access to payment plans, making important changes to protect consumers.
Urge your lawmakers to support this critical legislation!
