John,

This morning my prayers are with the entire Michigan State University
community after the horrific shooting in East Lansing.

As a mom of young kids, I’m furious that my kids have to wonder if they
are safe at school.

As an elected official, I’m beyond frustrated that Republicans and special
interest groups have stood in the way of real progress on gun violence
prevention.

Last year, I called out the gun lobby’s BS in an Oversight Committee
hearing as I tried to get them to commit to implementing simple safety
features into all firearms. The duty of the government is to keep its
people safe, and when romaine lettuce or treadmills cause harm—the
government recalls and regulates them. But because of the powerful gun
lobby and extremist Republicans, we continue to allow gun manufacturers to
turn huge profits while people are killed every single day.

Congress passed bipartisan gun violence prevention legislation into law,
but we always knew that wouldn't be enough. In the Senate I’ll fight to
take substantive, bold action to prevent gun violence. We don’t have to
live this way.
