John, today marks five years since we lost 17 lives in Parkland, Florida.

The students, educators, and faculty members who went to school that day were thinking about what they’d learn, or what they’d teach. But because of senseless, horrific gun violence, their futures were unfairly cut short.

Now, there are 17 families in Parkland today reeling from the loss of their loved one, and thousands of families like them across the country. Wondering why mass shootings continue to happen in our country to this day.

Here’s why, John: the Republican Party’s political cowardice and fealty to groups like the National Rifle Association.

After the Parkland shooting, over 1 million activists from all across the country marched alongside survivors and victims’ families to demand Congress take action. With the Democratic Senate majority you helped elect in 2020, we did.

President Biden signed the first federal gun safety law in three decades with the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — which included expanded background checks for gun purchasers under 21, funding for state red flag laws, crackdowns on gun trafficking and straw purchases, and partial closure of the boyfriend loophole.

Is it everything we wanted? No.

Will our legislation save lives that would have otherwise been lost to gun violence? Without a doubt.

We know that there are more common sense gun safety measures that the overwhelming majority of Americans support, like universal background checks, gun safety locks, a ban on assault weapons, and gun licensing.

But I’m willing to work with my Republican colleagues to pass any legislation — no matter how narrow — if it would save even one life.

That’s why I’m calling on the Senate to act now before any more lives are lost. If you agree, sign on to join me in calling on the Senate — including Mitch McConnell and the Republicans — to work with us to stop gun violence for good.

SIGN ON

We owe it to ourselves, the families mourning those they lost to gun violence, and to our future generations to do something to stop these horrific acts of violence.

Thank you for taking action alongside me.

With love and gratitude,

Cory
