The One-Minute Meeting

North of 54 million Americans bet on this year’s Super Bowl, a gaming company estimates. If that’s accurate, it’s about twice the 2022 estimate. The reason: 33 states and Washington, D.C., now feature live, legal sports betting markets, with three additional legal markets awaiting launch. The sheer volume of people placing bets in select cities, including Kansas City and Philly, will amaze you. But don’t forget: If you were a big winner on an online gaming site, the IRS will expect to hear from you.

Though the right-to-repair movement is growing, people who want to be able to fix their own electronics, farm equipment or machinery with computer parts have a long fight ahead. 17 states have recently introduced legislation that would make it easier for you to fix your own stuff, but some legislators are shooting such bills down over safety issues.

Americans bought a lot of life insurance during the pandemic. But the enthusiasm for such products is waning. “The surge in smaller whole life and term policy sales experienced in 2021 ended in 2022,” a life insurance research and marketing association reports. Today, I will tell you why, and why it reminds me of a Kenny Chesney song.
