Emotional Regulation and Addiction Treatment

We're not born with the ability to regulate our emotions. The ability to regulate—or manage—our emotional responses is a skill that can be improved with practice.

For many who struggle with substance use disorders, the inability to cope with difficult emotions in healthy ways contributes to the use of substances. Successful, long-term recovery often involves learning to manage negative emotions and enhance positive ones. Having the skills to cope with life stressors in healthy ways not only helps in preventing relapse but also in improving emotional and mental health, strengthening recovery and enjoying life.
