Tomorrow marks five years since a violent tragedy changed our lives and our community. Every day since February 14, 2018, we’ve felt the indescribable loss that the Parkland school massacre has left in our hearts. But in these five years, we’ve done so much to honor the memories of the daughters, sons, fathers, and spouses taken from us. Stand with Parkland’s founding families have banded together to do something about the violence in schools so that no other families have to experience the pain that we have had to endure.

Dear friends,

Tomorrow marks five years since a violent tragedy changed our lives and our community. Every day since February 14, 2018, we’ve felt the indescribable loss that the Parkland school massacre has left in our hearts.

But in these five years, we’ve done so much to honor the memories of the daughters, sons, fathers, and spouses taken from us. Stand with Parkland’s founding families have banded together to do something about the violence in schools so that no other families have to experience the pain that we have had to endure.

And while the pain has not subsided in these five years, we’ve taken that pain to make progress towards our goal of safer schools.

Ahead of the five-year anniversary of the tragedy that brought us together, Stand with Parkland – the National Association of Families for Safe Schools is launching a fundraising drive to sustain this work for years to come. Please consider making a contribution today.

Our organization has been sustainably and repeatedly successful in creating, advocating for, and changing local, state, and federal laws and policies to make students and teachers safe at school.

We put partisanship aside.

We move past outrage and indignation to take action.

We work with anyone – regardless of party affiliation – who shares our commitment to ending school shootings.

The loved ones we lost deserve nothing less.

In the past five years, we’ve seen many successes in our school safety movement:

  • We helped pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This law implements our three major pillars: campus security, student mental health, and safe firearm storage and is the first major piece of federal legislation targeting gun violence that has passed since 1994.
  • We successfully advocated for SB 590 - School Safety in Florida, which includes the establishment of a parental right to timely notification of threats at school, part of our Parents Need to Know initiative conceived by Board member Phil Schentrup and his wife April. They are Carmen’s parents.
  • We met with Education Secretary Cardona, Ambassador Rice, Representative Richmond, and others from the Biden administration to discuss our ongoing efforts to prevent mass school violence. We look forward to working together on physical school security measures, improved mental health programs, and responsible firearms ownership.
  • We created SchoolSafety.gov in collaboration with the Trump administration and codified it into federal law with Stand with Parkland’s Luke and Alex School Safety Act last year. The website is a one-stop-shop for those charged with the safety of America’s schools to find information on a multitude of topics from social/emotional learning techniques to checking the security plan with the readiness assessment tool.

Friends, these are just a few of the accomplishments we’ve made in order to honor our loved ones whose lives were senselessly taken in the Parkland school massacre. Nothing we do will ever bring our children and spouses back to us, but we are committed to doing everything we can to protect America’s families and schools.

With your support, we can keep this important work going and create a better future for all our nation’s children.
