One week ago today, 19-year-old Abdulbari awoke in the middle of the night to his aunt’s home shaking. He and his family fled into the streets, the sound of screams filling the air as buildings collapsed around them.
“Now people live on the streets, in tents, or [under] trees,” says Abdulbari, who resides near Idlib in northwestern Syria.
In fact, most of the 70+ countries where we work have long-term needs. That's why MSF maintains a presence in so many places—so that when emergencies strike, we can be ready. And it's why flexible funding, the kind that isn't earmarked toward a specific project or country, is so important: it gives us the steady support we need to act quickly, in an emergency, and wherever the need is greatest.
Abdulbari, like many people in Syria, is no stranger to crisis. In 2015, he was severely burned in a missile strike and received treatment from MSF. It’s a sobering reminder that for Syria, the aftermath of the earthquake is just one of several compounding crises. A decade of war, a dire economic situation, the COVID-19 pandemic, and—most recently—an outbreak of cholera had already pushed communities in the region to the brink.
In the most affected areas of southern Türkiye, our emergency teams are also assessing needs. We’re conducting discussions with authorities and local partners to determine the nature of our support that will have the greatest impact.
The road to recovery for Syria and Türkiye will be long, and MSF is determined to provide support for the challenges ahead. However, our ability to deliver aid relies on the sustained generosity of supporters like you. Thanks to unrestricted funds to MSF, we mobilize at a moment’s notice—just as we did in Syria, Ukraine, Haiti, and in other past emergencies—and make a lasting impact long after a crisis fades from the headlines.
