The Young Democrats of North Carolina’s Resilience Reception, formerly known as the Gantt-Watt Reception, is a yearly tradition of North Carolina’s youth auxiliary honoring the contributions of Black Americans to North Carolina and the Democratic Party.
This year, our Host is Representative Diamond Staton-Williams (D-Cabarrus). Rep. Staton-Williams made history this past November not only becoming the first Democrat to represent Cabarrus County in Raleigh in more than twenty years, but by becoming the first Black state legislator to represent Cabarrus County in the General Assembly.
Representative Staton-Williams’ win was one of the two Red-to-Blue flips in North Carolina that helped secure Governor Cooper’s veto and stop Republicans from governing unchecked in our state. Her candidacy helped to energize a cohort of young people to knock doors, make phone calls, and poll greet all across Cabarrus County.
Representative Staton-Williams’ victory is a resounding testament to her own personal resilience as a working mom who has battled adversity to become the first Black woman to serve on the Harrisburg Town Council to now represent Cabarrus County in Raleigh.
