John, tomorrow is Valentine's Day. A day to celebrate love. A day to mark the gratitude we hold for our closest friends and family. A day to honor being together. But tomorrow, there will be an unthinkable number of grieving mothers whose children died due to gun violence. There will be partners no longer able to celebrate the day with their love. Children missing their irreplaceable parents. All because of this senseless violence.

On Valentine’s Day, five years ago, a former student, armed with an assault rifle and 300 rounds of ammunition, killed 17 students and staff and wounded 17 others in just a matter of minutes at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen families’ hearts were collectively and irrevocably broken on a day all about love.

This year alone, 5,119 have already died due to gun violence. An average of more than 40,000 lives are taken from us far too soon every year because of this public health crisis. We should not have to grieve this often or live in such fear.

Today, you may be among those grieving someone. You yourself may be a survivor still carrying pain from the hardship you endured. You may be fearful that your child’s school could be next or that you will receive the police call in the middle of the night that no parent can possibly prepare for: [link removed]

Today, in honor of love, we’re asking you to send your elected officials valentines to help hold them accountable for pushing forward life-saving gun violence prevention legislation.

Please, help us put an end to this crisis and honor the lives we cannot bring back by helping save each of us still here, fighting for a better future.

With thanks,
Renee (she/her)
