[1]Real Justice
John, we are in a
new year — but seeing the same conservative attacks against our
progressive DAs.
Last year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended DA Andrew Warren
because he stated he would not use resources from his office to prosecute
women seeking abortions and the doctors that provided them.
Then, it was revealed in an internal memo that the Governor's move was
PURELY to remove a “progressive prosecutor.”
Now, Republicans in Texas have introduced new bills to take down so-called
“rogue” prosecutors and make it easier to remove them from office. And we
know that they are talking about progressive district attorneys who hold
police accountable, protect civil rights, free innocent people, pursue
justice and use their prosecutorial discretion to protect reproductive
rights.
And we are certain that three of our Real Justice DAs, John Creuzot, Joe
Gonzales, and Josè Garza, are going to be targeted by this and could even
be removed, even though all three were voted into office by the people in
their communities — including Joe and John winning re-election just a few
months ago.
[ [link removed] ]Republicans are moving quickly to target and remove progressive DAs in
Texas and replicate their efforts nationwide,
John. And they are backed by
conservative billionaires who have shown that they will do whatever it
takes to stop our movement. Will you make a contribution today to boost
our work in defending our DAs against these attacks?

This latest attack in Texas came about after 5 district attorneys pledged
to not prosecute abortion related crimes after the Supreme Court repealed
Roe v. Wade. And they are using as many tactics as they can to make sure
their attacks land.
They’ve introduced identical bills in the House and Senate that would
empower Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to take civil action against a
prosecutor who adopts a policy to limit the enforcement of any criminal
offense.
Governor DeSantis was able to take action against DA Warren in Florida to
get him suspended and removed from office. And now Republicans in Texas
want to use the same tactics to strip power from local progressive
prosecutors who were elected democratically by the people.
Additionally, Republican Senator, Phil King, proposed to reestablish a
council that monitors prosecuting attorneys and has authority to file a
petition to remove a prosecutor from office for “incompetence or
misconduct." If the council were to file such a petition, the prosecutor
in question would be immediately disqualified from performing their duties
while the petition is pending.
Republicans are working hard to attack our progressive DAs in Texas and if
they are successful, it will roll back so much of our important work while
also providing a blueprint that can be used to attack our pro-civil rights
DAs nationwide. They’re moving quickly to sign their plans into law and
start targeting local prosecutors immediately.
We need to stand firm in the face of those attacks with a robust plan to
back up our DAs to the fullest extent.
[ [link removed] ]John,
can we count on you to help us FIGHT
BACK by making a contribution today to our DA Defense Fund to support our
prosecutors in Texas who are currently under attack.
Thank you for taking action,
Real Justice
