One quick note: Our next general meeting will be on Monday, February 20, as our usual Wednesday time slot was unavailable at the library.
Hi Comrade,
We would be remiss if we didn’t at least mention the hazardous train wreck in East Palestine on February 4. If you live in the city or nearby, it is probably worth getting a health checkup now to have a current record of your health.
Not only is this an environmental issue, but it is also a labor issue: Workers had been warning for years that a wreck like this was inevitable due to the greedy practices of rail operators and outdated safety standards. This specific rail operator, Norfolk Southern, is worth about $55B and did a $10B stock buyback as it slashed jobs in 2017. They are offering East Palestine just $25,000, or about $5 per resident. Joe Biden failed to mention this in his recent state of the union, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has also been silent.
Much of the damage is done, but we likely won’t know the full extent for years. If nothing else, we should be reminded that it is we, the workers, who need to take charge in demanding our safety and well-being. A good place to start would be the Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee (EWOC), which has resources on how to organize and will host a workplace organizing series starting on March 8.
