Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I’m thinking about this message, which remains as powerful today as it was more than 60 years ago.

Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to equality and justice — and his work to advance the rights of his fellow citizens — changed the course of our nation’s history. He dreamt of a world where folks of all backgrounds and walks of life could find common ground, where together, we could make progress on the challenges we face.

To me, Dr. King’s message serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to make this country better for the next generation. By serving one another, and by living up to the call to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, we can create change in ways big and small. That’s what today is all about.

To honor Dr. King’s legacy, folks all over North Carolina — and nationwide — have spent this weekend and today taking action to help their communities in whatever way they can. It's a commitment to the common good that I know North Carolinians strive to carry out throughout the year, and I’m proud to do the same.
