Outright International invites you to a special webinar marking the release of our latest report on Afghanistan. This virtual event will take place on Wednesday, February 15, at 2 PM ET.

The report details first-hand accounts from 22 LGBTIQ Afghans who were interviewed between September and October of last year. Participants shared stories of beatings, sexual assault, or threats because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

This webinar will feature activist Basira Paigham from Afghanistan, Outright senior research fellow J. Lester Feder, and Kathryn Hampton, head of impact from Rainbow Railroad, which helps relocate LGBTIQ people. Opening remarks will be provided by Outright’s executive director, Maria Sjödin.

Neela Ghoshal is Outright's Senior Director of Law, Policy & Research, based in Washington D.C. Neela oversees Outright’s United Nations, Caribbean, and LBQ Connect and Research programs, develops organizational priorities concerning legal and policy change and ensures Outright’s work aligns with international human rights law.

J. Lester Feder is Outright’s Senior Fellow for Emergency Research. He researches the situation of LGBTIQ people in significant crises. He is a journalist and photographer who has reported in more than 40 countries, whose work has appeared in outlets including Rolling Stone, the New York Times and Vanity Fair.

Basira is an Afghan LGBTIQ human rights defender. She advocates for recognition, protection, and legalization of the Afghan LGBTIQ community's human rights, equality and freedom. She is founder of Afghanistan first informal LGBTIQ community and board member of Afghan LGBTIQ organization.

Kathryn Hampton is the head of impact at Rainbow Railroad, with responsibility for organizational development and strategy on programs, research and policy. She is a human rights advocate with more than a dozen years experience in refugee protection, research and policy.
