If one thing is clear, it’s that the Michigan GOP did not learn any lessons from 2022.

In elections across the country, voters made it clear that they are tired of extremism. Here in Michigan, candidates that campaigned on fear and division were overwhelmingly rejected at the ballot box.

An opinion piece in the Livingston Post summed it up: “Here in Livingston County, the Republicans apparently looked at the election results, asked for volunteers to hold their beer, and doubled down in the culture wars by moving way, way, right.”

But, rather than hearing this feedback, looking at the data, and changing their approach – it seems as though the Michigan GOP is doubling down ahead of their upcoming convention, where new party leadership will be chosen.

Last month, former President Trump endorsed Matt DePerno in the race for the new chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. As a reminder, Matt DePerno ran for Michigan Attorney General last year, campaigning on conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, and was accused of trying to steal voting machines. Michigan voters rejected him by over 375,000 votes.

On top of that, a new $50 registration fee has been implemented for delegates at the convention. It’s a symbol of how the party is faring. Not only are they struggling to come up with votes, they’re also unable to raise resources from traditional sources who are fed up with the more extreme direction of the party.

If there’s one thing we learned on the ground last year, it’s that Michiganders are desperately looking for Team Normal. It’s how Elissa won in one of the most competitive races in the country by her largest ever margin of victory. As the Michigan GOP continues down the path of extremism, chip in below to help us continue to be the voice of reason voters are looking for.
