Five years ago, a gunman entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and went on a deadly rampage through campus. Armed with an AR-15-style weapon, he murdered 17 people and injured 17 more and changed a tight-knit community forever. And still, our nation did not ban these deadly weapons.
Assault rifles like the one used in Parkland are the common thread between some of the deadliest mass shootings in our country's history — used to kill 61 in Las Vegas, 49 in Orlando, 21 in Uvalde… We know that banning these weapons will reduce instances of gun violence, because we’ve seen it work before. But the NRA and its paid-off politicians have continued to block legislation to ban assault weapons, putting gun industry profits over human lives. We have had enough bloodshed, it’s time to change this country.
