While the U.S. is experiencing abundance in almost every area of life—manufactured goods, diverse foods, entertainment and information—housing remains scarce and expensive even for relatively well-off Americans. The high cost of housing is a direct result of insufficient housing supply. This lack of attainable housing can be traced to restrictive zoning laws, which grew out of an understandable desire for communities to have the final say in their own development. Amending those regulations, steadily and broadly, offers the chance to alleviate the scarcity of housing.
