The death toll from the initial earthquake and damage has been catastrophic, Friend. But now survivors are struggling to stay warm amid the wreckage.
Here is what a survivor told the Associated Press: “We don’t have a tent, we don’t have a heating stove, we don’t have anything. Our children are in bad shape. We are all getting wet under the rain and our kids are out in the cold. We did not die from hunger or the earthquake, but we will die freezing from the cold.”
UNFPA is in the region right now working to make sure survivors don’t freeze to death or suffer further from this tragedy.
We are distributing blankets and warm clothes to survivors on the ground. We are also providing dignity kits to women and girls, which contain essential personal care items like soap, toothbrushes, flashlights, and menstrual products.
With needs growing and temperatures dropping, we have to make sure we can continue to scale our efforts and save lives on the ground.
Your donation will go toward responding to this disaster and supporting women and girls wherever they are, always.
Thank you so much,
— USA for UNFPA
P.S. If you’ve already made a donation over the last week, thank you! Our records take a minute to update, especially during emergencies, so we appreciate your patience and generosity. If you are moved to make an additional gift due to the freezing temperatures, you can do so here.
Your gift will deliver lifesaving sexual and reproductive health care to women and girls in more than 150 countries around the world. Thank you for being there for every woman and girl.
