A note about today --

Today, we remember the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and strive to honor his legacy with our actions. We remember to treat people with kindness, to respect and love others no matter our differences, and to never stop working toward a better world for all our children. Especially nowadays, as messages of hate and division seem to ring so loudly, it is more important than ever to lift up Dr. King’s words of love:

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

I am reminded of one of the greatest honors of my life, when I visited the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma with Rep. John Lewis and my family. It was a humbling experience that I will forever be grateful for.

That day sticks with me as a reminder of the sacrifice and unbreakable spirit of leaders like Dr. King and Rep. Lewis, who drove out so much darkness with their light and gave us all a better world to live in. It is also a reminder of how much work is left ahead to make Dr. King’s vision of this country a reality.

I want to close with what Dr. King said was life’s “most persistent and urgent question: 'What are you doing for others?'”

These words have been a compass throughout my life, and especially during my first year in Congress. It is a message Julie and I have tried to share with our children as much as possible: The greatest purpose for any of us is to do better for all of us. As we look to honor Dr. King’s life, let us do so with action in service to others and a greater dream for our country.

Thank you,

-Ben
