Friends,
Today we celebrate the life of one of the most powerful voices on civil rights and equality in our nation's history. Last year, I shared Dr. King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail as a reminder of his powerful words, many of which have never been more relevant. Today, I am reminded of another one of his messages, this time from a collection of his sermons, Strength to Love, published in 1963.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
Dr. King was right: during challenging times, we see people's true colors. Do they stand firm and do their duty, or do they bow to political expediency or convenience?
I would argue that challenge and controversy do not just reveal character – they demand it. I believe his words are a call to action. If we are to overcome challenge and controversy, we will need strength of character.
I do not think it is an exaggeration to say that this is by far the most divisive period during my time in the Senate or even in recent memory. In less than 24 hours, my Senate colleagues and I will begin listening to opening statements in the impeachment trial. Some may have already made up their minds one way or the other, making a political calculation before even attempting to hear evidence. But pursuing "comfort and convenience" is not our Constitutional duty.
Our job as jurors is to pursue the truth, wherever it may lead. Last week I swore an oath to pursue impartial justice, and that is what I intend to do.
Senator Doug Jones
PS: When the trial begins, I will be focused on deliberations and likely will not be emailing you. I will try to provide my thoughts in video form as often as I can, and I am counting on my team to keep you updated and make appeals for your help when it's needed. Remember, while I am doing my duty the candidates seeking the nomination against me are going to stay on the attack.
That is why I am asking you now to contribute to my campaign – I’m counting on your support now. Will you please make a contribution and make sure we can win re-election in November?
Thank you for all your help and support.
