WRAL News: In win for GOP, NC Supreme Court positioned to reverse major voting rights cases; The North Carolina Supreme Court's decision Friday to rehear a high-profile redistricting case and a controversial voter ID case indicates that the court's new GOP majority plans to undo voting rights rulings that had been seen as victories for Democrats.

John, President Obama warned that “the gains we’ve made in this redistricting cycle are fragile.” Now, we’re seeing the challenges he anticipated play out in North Carolina.

FIRST: Last year, our affiliate helped secure a monumental victory for voting rights and fair maps at the North Carolina Supreme Court.

BUT THEN: Control of the North Carolina Supreme Court flipped.

SO NOW: In what one local outlet called a “radical departure” from precedent, North Carolina’s Supreme Court has agreed to rehear the case Republicans lost!

LET US BE PERFECTLY CLEAR: Nothing in state law has changed, and no facts in the case have changed.

The only difference is that the lawmakers trying to gerrymander and suppress voting rights now get another chance before North Carolina’s Supreme Court.

Republicans have shown they’re willing to do whatever it takes to continue manipulating maps and undermining voting rights, even if it means subverting our system of checks and balances. Will you rush a donation now to help the NDRC fight back against these anti-democratic tactics across the country?

Attorney General Eric Holder did not mince words. He said: “This is not a function of legal principle – it is an indication of political opportunism.” He’s absolutely right.

And we’re afraid this is only the beginning.

Ahead of last November’s election, the fair maps movement helped secure what The New York Times called “the fairest House map of the last 40 years.” But if Republicans can continue stacking state courts in states across the country, the gains we’ve made could be rolled back before the next election!

The NDRC is committed to fighting these extremist efforts across the country, but the strength of our work is determined by grassroots supporters like you. Please: Will you pitch in now to help the NDRC end gerrymandering and build a strong democracy?
